South Beach glitters. One block off it, on 14th Street, there is a bar that has been actively ignoring the glitter since 1933, and it is the better for it. Mac's Club Deuce is the oldest bar in Miami Beach, a long, dark, neon-lit room with ceiling fans, pool tables at the back, a jukebox that refuses to be trendy, and a policy of two-for-one drinks during happy hour that has ruined many an afternoon. Anthony Bourdain came here for Parts Unknown and found the Miami he was actually looking for: not the rooftop-pool version, but the one where working people have been drinking since before the art deco hotels were restored.

The order is simple. Draft beer, cold, in a plastic cup if that is how the day is going, or a shot and a beer for the full experience. The happy hour is a genuine bargain and the bartenders have seen everything, so settle in and watch the room: boxers, poets, hotel workers and tourists who read the same article you did, all sharing the same worn bar top.

It opens early and closes late, which is the mark of a real bar rather than a scene. Cash is the language, so come prepared, and do not expect food worth planning around — this is a drinking place, and it knows it.

What Bourdain understood about Miami is that its soul is not in the clubs but in rooms like this one, where the city's decades of arrivals — Cuban, Haitian, Southern, Caribbean — all end up at the same bar. Mac's Club Deuce is not a stop on a tour; it is a place to sit down, order two drinks for the price of one, and let Miami come to you.
